Italian professor: 'Vietnam only knows a little about opera'

Professor Gianni Kriscak is the editor of the book History of Italian Opera Part I - with two Vietnamese authors Nguyen Thi Hien (also known as Hien Nguyen Soprano) and Trinh Thi Oanh - recently released in Vietnam.

Professor Gianni Kriscak currently teaches theater music at the University of Music and Performance in Graz (Austria).

Before that, he spent more than 10 years teaching opera history and performing as a pianist in Japan.

He recently came to Vietnam, to be present at the press conference introducing the book History of Italian Opera Part I and the concert La Passione by Hien Nguyen Soprano on the afternoon of February 28 in Hanoi.

The idea came "strongly and suddenly"

Sharing at a press conference on the afternoon of February 28, he said the idea of publishing this research book in Vietnam came to him "strongly and suddenly".

Professor Gianni Kriscak explained that Vietnam was actually not the first country he thought would publish his book.

During more than 10 years working in Japan, he noticed that "most of them only know a little about opera ", "many Asian artists think opera means singing and only singing".

"Why has opera become an essential part of European society, especially Italy?" he said, "knowledge about the potential for opera to arise and develop plays an important role", often overlooked by the Japanese. .

The "Japanese" he mentioned include not only singers but also conductors, stage directors, music teachers...

The homeland of opera is Italy.

He decided to teach the history of Italian opera, then intended to publish a book on the history of Italian opera in Asia so that those who love music, especially opera, can refer to it.

Around 2016, Mr. Gianni Kriscak taught at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. There are some students here who have beautiful voices.

However, Mr. Gianni Kriscak has to face the same truth as when he was in Japan, which is that very few people really know about opera.

After returning home from her studies, she realized that in Vietnam, monographs on opera were very rare.

"I told Professor Gianni Kriscak, I didn't expect that he also cherished it. The book was started two years ago, and has just been released now," Hien Nguyen said.

Going back in history in the "least boring" way

Sách tên Lịch sử opera Ý nhưng chỉ có 194 trang, trong khi cuốn A short history of opera (Lược sử về opera) - một cuốn được cho là kinh điển trong lĩnh vực này - đã khoảng 1.000 trang.

Với số lượng trang hạn chế thế, liệu có gói lại một cách đầy đủ lịch sử opera Ý, dù là lấy mốc từ bình minh bộ môn nghệ thuật này tới đầu thế kỷ 18?

Ông Gianni Kriscak nói, trong cuốn này, nhóm tác giả đưa ra những lời giải thích ngắn gọn về bối cảnh chính trị - xã hội, cũng như vai trò của các nhà hát ở Ý...

"Chúng tôi cố gắng đề cập những khoảnh khắc quan trọng và thú vị ở giai đoạn này - vốn chưa được phổ biến rộng, cũng ít người biết đến", ông nói.

Trong đó có cả giai đoạn trước khi nhạc kịch ra đời với các hình thức sân khấu âm nhạc khác nhau.

"Chúng tôi đã gắng viết nó một cách ít nhàm chán nhất", ông nói.

Hiền Nguyễn Soprano bày tỏ thêm, nhóm tác giả lựa chọn những điều quan trọng nhất trong lịch sử opera Ý để đưa vào sách, tránh lan man, giúp độc giả nắm bắt thông tin một cách nhanh và chuẩn xác nhất, tránh tình trạng nặng nề khi tiếp cận một loại hình được xem là hàn lâm ở Việt Nam.

"Sau khi ra mắt phần I, nếu cuốn sách được đón nhận ở Việt Nam, nhóm tác giả sẽ ra tiếp phần II", GS Gianni Kriscak chia sẻ.

Trong hòa nhạc La Passione (vào tối 1-3 tới tại Học viện Âm nhạc quốc gia Việt Nam, Hà Nội), Hiền Nguyễn Soprano và hai khách mời (Gianni Kriscak và Quốc Đạt) sẽ giới thiệu những bản nhạc tình kinh điển của thế giới và Việt Nam.

So với phong cách pop hóa cổ điển để tiếp cận công chúng, lần này hòa nhạc La Passione của Hiền Nguyễn Soprano đào sâu vào thính phòng cổ điển.

Chương trình gồm hai phần là thanh nhạc cổ điển và bán cổ điển với tổng 16 bản nhạc.

Về phía tình ca Việt Nam, có các tác phẩm như Ru con mùa đông (Đặng Hữu Phúc), Đêm nằm mơ phố (Việt Anh), Cung đàn mùa xuân (Cao Việt Bách), Chuyện tình thảo nguyên (Trần Tiến)…
